March 18, 2009 – Minutes of Meeting

ITEMS:

  1. Annual Financial Report was presented by treasurer, Billy Hatten. The report can be viewed on the GROWLS website in ‘Members Only’ section. GROWLS is very appreciative of Billy’s dedication and hard work on our behalf.
  2. Receipts - All GROWLS volunteers are reminded to submit receipts for expenses incurred on GROWLS behalf. Should you wish to make a donation of the expense money, please claim and then make a donation back to GROWLS. This procedure allows us to track all funding and disbursements in a transparent manner. This also can aid in securing funding if we can show a detailed financial picture of actual costs related to our voluntary efforts.
  3. Oiled bird workshop – Dar requests help from interested GROWLS members in planning for funding/fundraising/facilitating this event. Please call/e-mail Dar.
  4. “Fledgling” - Poetry Gabriola will be hosting a walk with poets along Drumbeg Provincial Park on Sunday, 29 March. This is a fund raiser for GROWLS. Jean Wyenberg will speak on the stages of early bird life (hatchling, nestling, fledgling).
  5. Great Bear Raincoast- final details discussed for tomorrow night’s (19 March) event.
  6. Sustainability/ Gabriola - John McCormick, an island resident, will present ideas for local sustainability based on the Whistler model of which he is a member. This event will take place at the Haven on Saturday, March 20.
  7. Rescue Kits - we now have availability of placing future orders for supplies through Noah’s Wish. These supplies will be specialized and not locally available i.e. Kevlar gauntlet gloves.
  8. GROWLS Van- a generous offer of a van for GROWLS use has been proposed. GROWLS is an un-incorporated registered society and we will have to investigate the feasibility of accepting this offer. Legalities aside, discussion on needs/use of such a vehicle was tabled for a future meeting. Jean Wyenberg will make initial inquiries.
  9. Temps - Global Lifestyles, a placement organization (http://www.globallifestyles.ca/) contacted Liz inquiring about GROWLS and our use/need for temporary workers. The workers are self-supporting individuals who are seeking experience in their field of interest/work. Since we are not a rehabilitation organization, we are not able to meet a hands-on need by Global Lifestyles volunteers.
  10. Public education through RDN- GROWLS members are asked to consider participating in the occasional talks to the public at some of our local parks this summer. Descanso Bay campground will be one venue where we can help educate/entertain young and old about our island wildlife and habitat. Talks would be brief and not require expertise. A willingness to research a topic of local island interest can be easily delivered. Team teaching also encouraged. More on this in the near future.
  11. Islands Trust- Liz delivered a GROWLS briefing at a recent islands Trust meeting. The focus was on the structure of GROWLS.
  12. Dr. Schwantje, DVM/BC Ministry of Environment, has corresponded with Jean Wyenberg regarding a seemingly large increase in illness with local deer this winter. Dr Schwantje postulates that we are most likely seeing malnutrition due to the harsher climate experienced this winter. It is to be considered a natural culling, not a new emerging disease. Jean will disseminate the information.
