October 20, 2010 – Minutes of Meeting

ITEMS:

  1. Old Business : Minutes of July 14, 2010 reviewed (August Meeting cancelled)
  2. New Business :
    1. Feedback from pager and rescue volunteers. This item will be ongoing. Donna suggested a new organizing of the call out list, grouping the volunteers in areas where they live so when we have a call those volunteers closest to the rescue would be called out first. Donna & Mark will work the idea and bring progress report to next meeting. Another discussion was about changing the case studies to calendar month stats starting in 2011.
    2. New Director- Lawrence Mayles has volunteered to lend his name to be a Director for GROWLS. Thank you Lawrence.
    3. Christmas Craft Fair at the Community Hall Sat & Sun November 20 & 21 require volunteers to represent GROWLS. Items for sale will be GROWLS History DVD’s, our wonderful line of GROWLS cards, possibly a new children’s book Eagle’s Cry where GROWLS is featured.
    4. Training Plans discussed for 2011 early spring possibly February GROWLS Rescue & Introduction To Wildlife Course. Training to be held at the Rollo Centre where facilities do include VCR & large screen TV.
    5. Presentations to community groups by growls volunteers showing the GROWLS DVD. Lions club booked for the November 22 meeting and Gabriola Elementary School very interested but no date yet. Jean and Jane were interested in teeming up to pursue organizations they would like to approach.
    6. Fall Fair raised about $1000.00 for the sale of the GROWLIES. It was a most inhospitable day with non-stop rain and a canopy fiasco, which sorted itself out. Thank you to true blue GROWLS members which as was pointed out contributed to the GROWLS coffers by buying a favorite GROWLIE. N.B. The GROWLIES were awesome !!!
    7. Jean’s connection with a First Nations children’s book author who was writing a story called Eagles Cry incorporated a GROWLS rescue of an eagle. The rescuers were Bob, Lynda & Judy and because excellent pictures were taken at the scene they were beautifully incorporated into the book. All of the rescuers were right up to snuff with their safety gear on. Congratulations to those intrepid volunteers and thank you Jean for this exciting GROWLS involvement.

Next meeting:  Wednesday, November 10, 7:00 PM, Rollo Centre
