Raccoon Rescues

  1. The Pager Person (PP) will coordinate the rehabilitation locale and transportation details while the Rescuer is conducting onsite work.
  2. Ensure that you have proper equipment to include: Carrier, heavy gloves, Catch Pole and/or Net Pole. Raccoon rescues should always involve a minimum of two persons.
  3. CONTROL THE AREA
    1. identify yourself by wearing your GROWLS vest and introduce yourself to bystanders;
    2. Ask bystanders for help if necessary;
    3. Ensure you are wearing your gloves.
  4. SITE ASSESSMENT
    1. survey the area for loose rocks and/or logs;
    2. if raccoon appears to be mobile, assess likely escape route(s) for raccoon;
    3. take pictures if able.
  5. Verbalize the rescue plan with all Rescuers. Speak in lowered whispers throughout the rescue. Be sure to coordinate BEFOREHAND ‘who – grabs – what’ for the hands-on portion.
  6. Approach the raccoon cautiously, speaking in low voices.
    NOTE: 
    Raccoons have very sharp teeth and claws and can be very aggressive. Always use a
    great deal of caution when dealing with these animals.
  7. Cover the raccoon completely with a towel and cover its eyes to encourage calm behaviour.
  8. Place towels on the bottom of the carrier for the animal’s comfort.
  9. Place the raccoon into the carrier and cover the carrier to provide a dark haven.
  10. Establish contact with the PP for further instructions.
  11. Complete the Rescue Sheet.
