Seal Pups Rescues

  1. The Pager Person (PP) will coordinate the rehabilitation locale and transportation details while the Rescuer is conducting onsite work.
  2. Two (2) Rescuers should conduct this rescue.
  3. CONTROL THE AREA:
    1. Identify yourselves by wearing the GROWLS vests and introduce yourselves to bystanders;
    2. Ask bystanders for help, if necessary;
    3. Ensure you are wearing gloves.
  4. SITE ASSESSMENT:
    1. Upon arrival, survey the area for loose logs and rocks;
    2. Be aware of the tide level and direction (rising/falling);
    3. Ensure proper footgear is worn (e.g. non-slip rubber boots);
    4. Take pictures, if able.
  5. Approach the seal cautiously. If you can walk up to it . . . it needs rescuing.
  6. Observe the condition of the animal (sores or other injuries).
  7. Cover the seal with a towel to cocoon it and calm it down.
  8. Lift the seal into the Kit container (air holes ample and free).
  9. Remove the towel. Bag the towel, if able, and eventually discard it.
  10. Carry the seal to your vehicle. Establish contact with the PP for further instructions.
  11. Complete the Rescue Sheet.
  12. Keep animal in shade.
