April 16 2014 – Minutes of meeting

Attendance: Liz Ciocea, Jane Giffin, Liz Steele, Andy Rollerson, Vicki McDonald, Carol Heimrich, Nicki Westarp, Shirley Highfill, Judy Kuby

1. Review of Minutes - Motion to approve: Liz Ciocea, Liz Steele second - approved

2. Case Studies

Aggresive seal rescued in Decourcy area taken to Salt Spring but did not survive

Stellar Jay that flew into window taken to Errington

Monitoring a fawn and another died with a broken leg

Kestrel rescued and flew off

Presently looking for a seal at Orlebar that has been reported

3.Treasurer Report - The GROWLS shed cost $770. $400 was donated by Arbutus.

Telus bill was $149 from June -Sept. Ads $558. Eagle nest monitoring will cost $1000. Transportation reimbursement $48.

Donations June-Sept $842; Canada Helps $336; Chimp $50.

Checking $1288; savings $5380.

4.Committee Reports

a. Christmas craft fair at Rollo Nov 15 - Betty Lou Hagan will man the table and sell cards, clay seals and bark owls. Table to be shared with Cats Alive

b. Rescuers and drivers -ongoing

c. Eagle Monitoring - Iain Lawrence reports that we should have a report by the end of November. Need to check on yellow tags on eagle trees

d. Library project - Joanna McKenzie working with library to add new books

e. GROWLS shed - open and ready to move things in. Kristin Miller will organize the shed keep the inventory. Fred Kaarsmaker was presented with a saw as a thank you for his work on the shed.

f. Coats Millstone Reserve - Reps from GROWLS, NALT, Islands Trust and GALT will meet at the reserve Oct 22 to discuss what can be done to make the ponds safer. Possible fencing or grates over holes.

g. Highway Wilding video - not shown due to lack of time

h. Pager change - As of March 31 pagers will no longer be available. Need to investigate alternatives

i. Sounder articles - Liz will investigate the possibility of continuing her articles in the Sounder now that the Shingle is no longer being published

j. Rescue magnets - Vicki McDonald has obtained magnets to put on our cars when transporting injured wildlife. She will get more and have GROWLS printed on all of them. Shirley will contact ferry to see if we can get priority loading when transporting injuries.

k. Thank you received from Mark Shaw for physio voucher

l. Donation to Salt Spring - Motion by Liz Steele to donate $1000 to Salt Spring rescue; seconded by Liz Ciocea - approved
