May 18 2016 – Minutes of meeting

IN ATTENDANCE: JANE GIFFIN, IAIN LAWRENCE, VICKI MCDONALD, JOANNA MCKENZIE, LIZ CIOCEA

  1. GROWLS FINANCIAL REPORT presented by treasurer Vicki McDonald.

Fiscal year February 01,2015 to January 31,2016 Thank you Vicki.

2   Animals taken into care; April 20, 2016 to May 18, 2016

3 Raven's  - 1 Towhee were taken to Errington.  I raven was euthanized - three bones broken in one wing.

1 Hummingbird  - a few days old transported to Wild ARC.  Wild ARC is best equipped to handle Hummingbirds.

 

Grade 2/3 class found a small bird - took to Twin Cedars - it was euthanized because of infection in wing joint.

California Seal Lion was beached on dock on Mudge.  DFO was notified.

  1. GROWLS Dispatcher Training well received but Shirley not at meeting to give report. Attendees very pleased with the training and information. Some problems with cell phone coverage. Suggested by Joanna, if this is the case, Shirley holds the phone then contacts the new dispatcher and relies information and mentors at the same time.
  2. Jane reports same two or three people sending back info when they are not available. Does this then mean everyone else is available ?
  3. Eagle Monitoring visit wih Ian Mouls. Nests active ,chicks being born not all nests visited. Iain Lawrence
  4. Library Project. Joanna has a new spectacular book on the Beaver suggested getting another copy to add to the GROWLS library.
  5. Gabriola Bats, Bat counts coming up in June. Trying to identify where there are Bat Roosts. Liz Ciocea
  6. Eagle Release, momentous and wonderful. Future releases better crowd control around the carrier before the bird is freed. Thank you to all who participated in the rescue , taking the birds to rehab ,picking them up and the release to the dispatcher for setting everything in motion.
  7. Mentoring new rescuers. Joanna contacted rescuers various levels of comfort more discussion needed to set up a proper schedule so everyone is included that being new members.
  8. Tetanus shots a reminder for everyone rescuing wild animals that their tetanus shot be up to date. As rabies is not a big factor this is not as much a requirement
