Fledglings

Sunday March 29, 2009 was a beautiful sunny day sandwiched between what seemed like endless days of rain, wind and cold. It was windy but the sun shone and a very happy group of poetry and bird lovers gathered at noon at the picnic table in Drumbeg Park. A poetry event in honour of fledglings…those brave feathered babies who every year take the gigantic leap out of the nest and into the air..hopefully. The event was organized by Hilary Peach of Poetry Gabriola and sponsored by the Gabriola Recreation Society as a fundraiser for GROWLS.

The special guest for this event was Robert Priest (Dr. Poetry) and he broughthis son Daniel who, after realizing he had brought his exam notes instead of his poem, sang a beautiful song for the gathering. In addition to Robert’s poetry there
were contributions by Hilary Peach and Alex Varty, Patsy Ludwig, Kit Pepper, Sharon McInnes, Maureen Karagianis, Dave Bouvier, Jean Wyenberg and Kim Goldberg (extreme birder from Nanaimo). It was bright and warm and the poems, borrowed and original, were enjoyed by all.

GROWLS would like to thank Hilary and the Gabriola Recreation Society for the total of $175.00 raised for our efforts in protecting our wildlife.
