August 20, 2008 Minutes of Meeting

BUSINESS:

  1. Jaki Deer, a new GROWLS member, was introduced;
  2. Articles Required – Liz has volunteered to write articles of 300-500 words or the Flying Shingle newspaper that are to be independent of GROWLS articles submitted to the Sounder. However, Liz acknowledges that all of
    the Good Stories about wildlife and GROWLS are not just contained within her memory bank, and wishes to have stories – or ideas for stories – sent
    to her for possible forwarding to The Press. Can you help?;
  3. A new ‘Rescue & Release’ Card Line (made by Jean Wyenberg) was shown to attendees. These photographic cards will complement the artistic cards made by Betty Lou Hagen and all will be offered at upcoming kiosks
    and island events;
  4. Fall Fair – to be held Saturday, 13 September, from 1000 – 1600L at The Commons. GROWLS requires volunteers to participate. There are no “GROWL’ies” this year to auction-off;
  5. Educational Pursuits:
    • A summer Intern is still desired. This person could perform wildlife
      talks at island Parks and beaches, as well as doing Pager Duty;
    • A summer workshop based upon the “Teaching Young Children
      About Wildlife” paper (see GROWLS web site, Wildlife Tips) was
      suggested;
    • School visits – a visit every 2-3 months during the academic year
      was suggested. Volunteers call Liz 250.247.8805.
    • Eelgrass – pictures of False Narrows grass were distributed for
      edification;
    • Oil Spill Workshop – tentatively planned for a weekend before next
      summer. This may mushroom such that GROWLS/Gabriola is host
      to other island attendees.
    • Marine Mammal Response Network – the Primary Response Manual, plus 2 report forms, has been received in hard copy and electronic form from DFO. Electronic versions will be e-mailed to GROWLS’ members for review. Note the Reporting phone number and e-mail addresses on Page 6 of the Manual. If deemed
      beneficial, this material could be utilized in our training classes and placed within our web site for reference. Once reviewed, please send comments to bill.lynda.kalbfleisch@shaw.ca
  6. New Equipment – the recent surge in eagle rescues has spurred the ordering of equipment as depicted in the May Meeting Minutes (catch

    poles, armoured gauntlets);

  7. The GROWLS Expense Form is now on our web site (Members Only/Worksheets) for those wishing recompense for rescue/transportation costs. Download/print the form and submit (with receipts) to Billie Hatton.
