February 10, 2010 – Minutes of Meeting

ITEMS:

  1. Old Business -
    Minutes of the January meeting were reviewed:

    1. Website; Ongoing updates. Members are encouraged to send in comments, suggestions and material. Forward to Dar;
    2. Willcox Luncheon; Silva Bay is the designated location and a Friday in February will be selected. Liz will complete the final details (date) and an e-mail will be sent to all members. Action: Liz
  2. New Business :
    1. Case Studies; presented by Sheila L. Can be viewed on website;
    2. WRNBC; Information on whom and what the WRNBC is comprised of was explained to those present;
    3. Oiled Wildlife Society Membership (OWS);  Liz explained this society and its value to our environment when oil spills occur. It was approved to renew the GROWLS annual membership to the OWS;
    4. Bylaws/Dogs;  Discussion was held on the apparent lack of bylaws requiring dogs to be leashed when not on their owners’ property. Continued public education will be carried out by GROWLS. Liz and Moira will prepare 2009 statistics on dog/deer incidents, plus an accompanying article, for future publication; Action: Liz/Moira
    5. Lawrence Mayles;  Lawrence introduced his recently published book “Conversations with a Box of Cereal”. Members can contact Lawrence for more information and/or acquire a copy of his book;
    6. Official Community Plan; Liz briefed members on her involvement as spokesperson and as GROWLS representative for our island’s wildlife preservation/habitat. This is an ongoing commitment;
    7. GROWLS History;   Liz presented the slide show she will be showing at the March WRNBC AGM. Jill and Liz have compiled and arranged a superb endeavour on GROWLS behalf. This will be a great education tool on the establishment and growth of GROWLS and its ongoing contribution to Gabriola residents, both natural and human. Thank you Liz and Jill.
