February 9, 2011 – Minutes of Meeting

Welcome to Annette Lorek, Aiden Simmons, & Fiona Maccarthy new members who share the vision of a wild Gabriola.

OLD BUSINESS

Seal Pup Chronicles still a possibility for the website.
Presentations to Community Groups of the GROWLS History DVD. Jill & Liz attended the Gabriola Lions Club January meeting to show the GROWLS History and were presented with a $500.00 donation for GROWLS.
Speakers/Presenters for GROWLS education and fundraising

Eagle Rescue Protocols reviewed. Eagle Monitors needed contact Darlene Mace. Eagle Dates (clip & save) and request for monitors to be in both island papers. Dog crate list and locations have been sent out to pager people.
Deceased animals on private property discussed. Liz will refer to RDN Director Rudischer as GROWLS received 25 calls in 2010 & 19 calls in 2009 from homeowners not knowing what to do about dead deer on their property. GROWLS will advise people when handing the above wear gloves and hand washing critical but GROWLS is not about animal removal.
Deer study by UBC researchers was discussed; Sharon Mc Innes would like the author to come to Gabriola. She will contact and then an email will be sent to GROWLS members including the study and if we should host this event. TBD at March meeting.
GROWLS Rescue & Introduction to Wildlife Course set for Saturday Feb. 19. Pager Training also planned for the near future.
Moira Nichol would like a trip to IWNCC on Salt spring Is. (seal pups from Gabriola are rehabbed here). She will contact. Liz will contact members for number who might be interested in going to SSI.
