August 21, 2013 – Minutes of meeting

  1. Ferne Road citizens Committee – Ode Howard and Tammy Hudgeon gave a presentation on their concerns re. possible heavy metal/lead/arsenic/zinc contamination in the gun club area and the possibility of groundwater contamination. The Islands Trust, Ministry of the Environment and the Groundwater Society have been approached with the problem. The M of E asked the gun club to do an assessment in January 2012 but there are no results yet. The group wants to create dialogue in the community and is asking GROWLS to help educate people.   1. Proposal for study of Gabriola’s eagle population by WITS – presentation by Darlene Mace and Iain Lawrence about getting a comprehensive study of the eagle nests on the island and asking GROWLS for $1000 toward the study.

Motion: Charge WITS to go to RDN to get assurance that the study results will be used when giving building permits – passed

Motion: To donate $1000 for WITS to do the eagle study as long as Islands Trust donates $1000 also – passed

 

  1. Review of minutes of July 17, 2013 – approved

 

  1. Case study report – 6 rescued seals doing well; raven sent to Errington but did not make it; pine siskin rescued; fawn with swollen leg and a deer with a broken leg reported but not seen again; otter asleep under a rock and in bad condition reported and another reported otter has become aggressive and M of E suggests getting a trapper, Wild ARC will help

 

  1. Puppet show at the Theatre Festival a great success and we have been asked to present it again at the Fall Fair
