September 14, 2011 – Minutes of Meeting

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. Review of minutes for August.
  2. Case studies for August, read by Donna.

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Discussion about special meeting Tuesday Sept. 20. Reminder e-mail will be sent by Liz C.
  2. Liz Steel and Mark Hendricks will run the meeting at The Haven on the possibility of putting Growls records, etc. online and Liz Steele will apply for funding for this. Call to reserve for dinner first, if we wish.
  3. School visits in the upcoming school year. Carol will try to see about a Junior Growls. If anyone is interested, we need someone who will be prepared to do this. Hetty and Joanne would be interested in doing this. Could show the rescue kit. It could be class by class.
  4. Upcoming Pager Training in October. Sheila Lake does the training. Ten have said they are interested in Pager training and five of those have committed for a date (Thursday Oct. 13th a.m.). We will learn how to handle the calls and who to send out when necessary.
  5. Ideas for new card line. Liz C. Showed two possibilities: an owl release and “Bagging it for the Planet” and a rescue and release card for the heron. WITS (Wildlife Tree Stewardship) needs a special eagle card to help with fundraising.
  6. Review of Zoonoses (disease transmitted to humans by animals). Channel 5 did a program on Lyme disease and how often it is undiagnosed. West Nile virus is also heading this way. There also is a danger from sea life, like seals, (Leptorosos) Do not wash the blankets and towels, discard them if they are soiled. Also the intestinal roundworm from raccoons is the worst (from their feces). Gloves that are soiled must be discarded. Be sure to wash hands well after a rescue.
  7. DVD on Wildlife, watched Erington releases.
  8. GROWLS Puppet Show: Tawny Capon will do a set and Rick Cranston will help do the sets. We can do stories based on the shore, the forest... an eagle's nest, a beaver's lodge. Anyone who is interested can be involved. Other puppets are ordered.
  9. Norm Snihur Appreciation Luncheon in October? Could we see about having him fly over in his helicopter and we could take him out for lunch? Liz C. will e-mail him and see if he would let us honour him in this way (and Bruce Mason would like to do an article on him).

MEETING ADJOURNED 8:30 PM
